Message from the EMCY President.
This year is the 13th edition of the International Competition of Young Pianists dedicated to the Work of ‘Fryderyk Chopin’. Founded in 1997, it has become a well-established international competition. 41 young musicians from all over Europe and Asia were admitted to take part in the competition, in three different age groups. They will present themselves before an international jury in the final rounds that will be held in February. Music competitions are much more than measuring your talents against other young musicians, it is an opportunity to develop personally and musically. It is often a first step to performing in public. Competitions offer an opportunity to exchange with other young musicians with the universal language of music, an aspect important in the world of today where communication should be intensified on a personal and human level. We would like encourage all the participants to strive for their best and wish them good luck! For 50 years, since its foundation, EMCY stands for musical excellence, promoting the youth and European cooperation. One prize winner of the International F. Chopin Competition will receive the EMCY Prize that consists of an online profile on www.emcy.org and the chance to be promoted in international projects. We would like to thank the organisers of the competition, the Narva Municipality, for their investment in the young musical talents of tomorrow, establishing such a high calibre competition that is an asset to the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY) network. Dear music friends!
Welcome to Narva, which thanks to you, good musicians, music teachers and judges, will become Estonia’s winter capital of piano music.
Narva is an important centre of international cultural and musical life in Estonia, and one of the iconic events is the International Chopin Competition, which will take place for the 12th time this year. As confirmation of the long friendship between Poland and Estonia and the love of Fryderyk Chopin’s music, 63 talented young pianists from 15 countries will meet in Narva and take pleasure in making music and enjoy the superb music that will fill the days of this competition.
The competition is much more than just a contest that will determine the most brilliant interpreters of the day. The competition provides a window onto the wide world of music, an opportunity to compare one’s playing skills with one’s contemporaries, and to get excellent advice from the best teachers. This is an opportunity to listen, gather ideas and experiences, and to question and dream boldly! I am sure that more than one of the participants in today’s competition will be a welcome guest on the world’s best concert stages in the future or will be a respected teacher, who will attract students from around the world.
We are waiting with excitement to hear the emotional colouring and accents that these young people will discover in Fryderyk Chopin’s work. I hope that the International Chopin Competition will be a memorable meeting place for you, where a large audience will share in your talent and dedication, and where you will find life-long friends and confreres.

It is with great pleasure that I greet the participants of the 12th International Chopin Competition in Narva, and cordially congratulate and thank the City of Narva, the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Polish Embassy in Tallinn, the National Chopin Institute, and the Estonian Broadcasting Company for perseverance and consistency, which brought the result in the form and shape of today's joyful experiences and the celebration of the beauty of the music of one of the most outstanding composers of the world.
The Music of Fryderyk Chopin characterized by classical perfection has a timeless value and strengthens us in the conviction that music penetrates the essence of the world and gives it an artistic dimension. The noble contest of young artists from many different countries proves yet again the value of the works of the great Polish composer, making it free of the boundaries of space and time. The uniqueness of the works is the reason for us to be proud of our prominent countryman; their Polish character, so easily perceptible in the rhythms of the mazurka and nostalgic cantilena, makes us express special gratitude to the organizers of the 12th International Chopin Competition in Narva, which for many years have contributed to the development and promotion of Polish culture in Estonia.

For almost twenty years Narva has been speaking the Chopin language in the middle of winter. Thanks to young talents from all over the world, we have the opportunity to recognize or discover anew the music of the most outstanding Polish composer. This time we meet in Narva in the year that is special for both Poland and Estonia. One hundred years ago the dreams of many generations of the Estonians and Poles became reality as Estonia gained its independence and Poland regained it after 123 years of partitions.
The music of Fryderyk Chopin is part and parcel of the Polish romanticism – and ideological and creative movement, which keeps shaping the hearts and minds of the Polish people. In the political dimension the movement was and still is an expression of peoples’ aspirations for freedom. These aspirations are universal – that is why we would call Fryderyk Chopin, who first and foremost is a Pole and a European – a musician of the world. This idea is perfectly reflected in the words of the outstanding romantic poet Cyprian Kamil Norwid, who wrote about Chopin: "A native of Warsaw, a Pole in the heart, and a citizen of the world by the talent". Indeed, the number of participants in this year’s Chopin Competition, which has gathered 63 young talented musicians from 15 countries, just proves the point.
Poland and Estonia have very strong ties in many areas, including culture. The Polish government has prepared a comprehensive programme for celebration of the 100th anniversary of regaining its independence. Also in Estonia we have planned a number of events that will help you get to know Poland better. It is a great pleasure and honor for me to open this year’s cultural programme entitled “Independent” in Narva, on the occasion of the 12th International Chopin Competition.
Although it was written two centuries ago, the music of Fryderyk Chopin remains amazingly fresh; it can surprise and it can inspire. The influence of Chopin can be traced in the creations of many famous Polish jazz composers, such as Krzysztof Komeda and Leszek Możdżer. The Polish music is becoming more and more popular in the world thanks to its reference to Chopin, among other things. I firmly believe that the young pianists, who have come to Narva to play the Chopin’s repertoire, will be successful in life and part of their success will be their inspiration by the music of the great Chopin.
Dear pianists and their teachers! I would like to congratulate you on the fact that you decided to compare your musicality with the extremely demanding music of Fryderyk Chopin. I wish you all good luck. But I also wish you to find the meaning in the music. The meaning that transpires the limits of technical mastery of the performance, i.e. have an aesthetic experience. As Chopin himself put it, “there is nothing more repulsive than music without hidden meaning”.

Founded in 1999, and EMCY member since 2002, the International Competition of Young Pianists dedicated to the Work of 'Fryderyk Chopin' has become a well-established biannual European competition.
This year 63 young pianists from 15 countries have been pre-selected in the three different age categories to compete in the final rounds and present themselves before an international jury.
Music competitions are much more than just measuring your talents with others, it is an opportunity to gain experience, exchange with others and develop further, not only musically but also as a person. I would encourage all participants to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the competition and wish them good luck!
The organisers of the competition the Narva Municipality with support of Estonian Ministry of Culture, Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Embassy of Poland in Estonia, National Institute of Chopin and Chopin Society in Warsaw, illustrate how music crosses borders and have established a competition that brings valued experience and collaboration to the European Union of Music Competition for Youth (EMCY) network.

Dear friends of the International Chopin Competition and Chopin music!
The Chopin Competition in Narva has always been a week of Chopin music not only in Narva Music School but also a lively topic of discussion on the streets of the city.
Young participants have created a wonderful atmosphere for Chopin music and for support of the healthy spirit of competition, which helps all children to accept any decisions of the jury, which are sometimes hard to take.
I am thankful to the participants of all the Chopin competitions for the unforgettable emotions and their work; I am grateful to the organizers for the years of cooperation, at times difficult cooperation; I wish the 12-th International Chopin Competition lots of luck!
From the bottom of my heart I wish the participants bright emotions, new friendships, and top places in their groups. To the very friendly Narva audience I wish great enjoyment, which has always improved the climate during this week in the month of January. I hope that the future competitions will increase the Narva event its international acclaim.
